Utility Reminders & Updates
The Town continues to improve utility services while helping residents stay informed about changes that may affect their accounts. From meter upgrades, to helpful tips for managing energy use during warmer months, and an upcoming return to standard billing practices, here’s what residents can expect in the months ahead.
Meter System Upgrade Progress
The town-wide meter system upgrades have made significant progress, with water meter upgrades now complete and electric meter upgrades on track to wrap up in a few months.
Once complete, these upgrades will provide for increased efficiency, faster problem resolution, and new features in MyAccount, like the addition of personalized daily usage data.
Residents may have noticed signs posted at neighborhood entrances announcing meter replacements. If your meter has not yet been replaced, keep an eye out for contractor vehicles with US Bronco branding and Town signage.
When crews arrive at a home, they knock on the door to notify residents before beginning the replacement. If no one is home, a door hanger will be left with information about the work that was completed. Visit www.apexnc.org/MSU for details.
Coming Soon: Return to Standard Billing Practices
Beginning this summer, the Town will gradually return to standard utility billing practices that were paused in July 2024. Many of the billing challenges related to the transition to new software and printing vendors have now been resolved, allowing staff to resume normal operations.
For customers, this shift means that the Town will once again follow its standard billing practices. This includes reinstating the typical practice of charging a 1% late fee on balances more than 60 days past due, and service disconnections due to non-payment for accounts with balances over $500 that are greater than 90 days past due.
In preparation for this return to standard practices, customers are encouraged to:
Check your Balance – Customers may choose to pay an outstanding balance in full in-person, over the phone, or online through the MyAccount portal.
Make a Plan – Visit www.apexnc.org/Billing for more information about a payment plan agreement that allows customers to spread their outstanding balance across up to 12 monthly, interest free installments.
Get Support – For those experiencing financial hardship, local and regional assistance is available to help cover a portion of utility costs. A list of resources and information about how to apply can be found at www.apexnc.org/help.
The Town is committed to keeping residents informed and supported as these improvements and updates roll out. If you have questions about your account or utility services, staff are available Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm to help. You can visit the Billing Office on the first floor of Town Hall or contact Ask Apex, the Town’s call center, at (919) 249-3311.
Summer Savings Tips
As temperatures begin to rise in the spring and summer months, a few small changes at home can make a big difference in managing your energy use. Here are some simple ways to stay cool while keeping costs manageable:
Set your thermostat thoughtfully. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be. Setting your thermostat to the highest comfortable temperature can lower your cooling expenses. Even lowering the temperature by one degree in the warmer months can increase energy use by 3-5 percent.
Use fans to your advantage. Ceiling and portable fans can make a room feel cooler while using less energy that an AC unit. Just remember to turn them off when leaving a room!
Block out the heat. Closing windows, blinds, and drapes can help keep the cool air inside during the hottest parts of the day. Adding caulk or weatherstripping to seal air leaks around doors and windows can also help.
Change air filters regularly. Regularly replacing your filters can help keep your system running efficiently.
Shift household chores. If possible, run dishwashers and washing machines later in the evening. Wash full loads of dishes and clothes for better efficiency.
Keep up with the latest information on utility projects by visiting the town’s website, reading inserts found in monthly utility bills, following town social media channels (www.apexnc.org/socialmedia), and subscribing to the All in Apex eNewsletter (www.apexnc.org/enews).
