HOW IT CAME TO BE
The idea to create Apex EarthFest happened organically (pun intended). When the Apex Sustainability Program launched in July 2020, Sustainability Coordinator Megan Pendell noticed a need for “point-source” groups and organizations that enhanced sustainability efforts in the Apex community. At the same time, the Sustainability team continued meeting members of the community who were interested and passionate about sustainable living. In May 2021, more than 30 residents came together with a common goal and created the Apex Sustainability Alliance (ASA). Today, the ASA has over 130 members, many of which serve on the Planning Committee for Apex EarthFest.
Fueled by the commitment and growth of the ASA and the Apex Town Council’s strategic goal of “Environmental Leadership,” the Sustainability team sought to create an event where the community could engage with sustainable products and education in a fun and informative way!
Since 1970, Earth Day has been celebrated as a way of raising awareness, inspiring activism, and bringing people together for the environment. Today, thousands of communities around the world celebrate Earth Day by hosting events and movements. Apex EarthFest is one of the first events in our region that celebrates Earth Day and brings the community together.
HOW IT’S ENGAGING OTHERS
One way this event is already engaging the Apex community is with the creation of an annual logo contest. The contest engages both Apex high school and middle school students by asking them to create a unique logo to capture their vision of what Apex EarthFest should be. The Apex EarthFest Planning Committee reached out to local art and graphic design teachers. Many local schools took advantage of this fun opportunity to let students get creative! After all, when thinking of ways to work towards a sustainable future, Apex EarthFest organizers saw the need to include those who will inherit that future: Apex youth!
The 2022 contest—the inaugural contest—received 12 creative submissions. The Apex EarthFest Planning Committee voted on the winning contest logo, which will serve as the focal point of the 2022 event. Congratulations to Quinlan Campbell at Apex Friendship High School for winning the first-ever Apex EarthFest logo contest!
The Apex EarthFest 2022 winning logo will be featured on Apex EarthFest promotions, social media, merchandise, and decorations at the festival. Come celebrate with us on April 23 and look for the logo all around the festival space!
We hope to see you on April 23 at Apex EarthFest so you can learn more about nature, environment, and sustainable living—all while having fun!
