This year has been different than all of those that have preceded it in our lifetime. Kids that have been in the school system are adapting to an entirely new learning system. Love it or hate it, it’s going to be this way for at least a little while longer.
Virtual learning has helped to keep the kids on track with learning, but what about the other things that the school offers – and specifically the social interaction that they get with their peers? Valentine’s Day is one of those important days that students won’t get to share with their peers.
For the younger ones, school was also a place where they could make a craft in secrecy, and present it at home on Valentine’s Day.
Though it’s not exactly the same, here are a few crafts that you can do with them to help fill that void.
Foam Coasters with Lace Center
A VERY simple craft with a functional purpose. These foam coasters are quick and easily customizable.
Supplies:
Red or pink foam sheets
Lace doilies (ours happened to be heart-shaped)
Glue
Scissors
Directions:
Cut the foam paper using the pattern from a heart cookie cutter, the center of the lace, or cut out the one below.
Glue the doily between two foam hearts. You’re done!
Candy Heart Garland
Supplies:
Colorful paper
Letter stamps
Small hole punch
Bakers twine
Scissors
Directions:
Cut out hearts in candy colors. We used two different cookie cutters to trace our designs, and cut three at a time.
Stamp cute sayings on each card. Great task for the kids!
Punch out two tiny holes in the top of each heart so you can string them into a garland.
Lastly, string them together and then hang your new candy heart garland.
Yarn-Heart Cards
Cards are going to be big this season since it’s tougher to see our friends and loved ones. Here’s a design to make your cards a bit more personal and fun for the recipients. It’s a fun project for the kids, and helps with fine motor skills.
Supplies:
Colorful yarn (about 10 ft per heart)
Thick card stock
Large threading needle
Pencil
Eraser
Scissors
Heart template (like a cookie cutter)
Directions:
Trace your heart template lightly onto the cards with a pencil.
Punch holes alongside the heart with your needle. Erase your pencil marks.
Thread yarn through the holes in various directions. It does not always have to be run to the exact opposite side. Cut off the yarn on the underside and tie up. You’re done.
