School is out and the temperature is climbing. That can only mean one thing, summer has arrived! Summer in Apex means movies, music and fun for the family. But it doesn’t have to mean spending a lot to enjoy your time together. We’ve put together a few ideas for free activities to enjoy during the peak summer months!
Apex Fishing Derby
June 9 @ Seagroves Park Pond, Apex
Come have fun at the 2nd Annual Fishing Derby for people with disabilities. This event is open to fishing enthusiasts of all ages. Wheelchairs are welcome and bait will be provided. Prizes awarded for the most fish caught and the largest fish caught. There will also be a casting competition. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Check-in is at 8:30am, start time is at 9:00am.
Arts & Crafts for Kids
1st & 3rd Saturday of the Month | 10:30am-12:30pm
@ Halle Cultural Arts Center
Bring your little one’s aged 4-12 to the Halle Cultural Arts Center for free arts and crafts. Participation is free and no registration required. Parents must accompany their children. Note that classes will not be held on June 2 or June 16.
Visit Local Fire/Police Station
Anyday, anytime! | Closest Fire Station or Police Station
Why not bake a batch of cookies or put together a fruit basket and drop by your neighborhood fire or police station. Tell them how much you appreciate them and all that they do to help keep Apex safe. Who knows, you may even get to sit in a fire truck!

Host a Neighborhood Block Party
Grab your neighbors and friends and have an old-fashioned block party. Hook up some iTunes and have everyone bring a dish to share. After all, everyone has been hibernating all winter. It’s time to get out and reconnect.

Bust out the old family board games like Monopoly or Scrabble. Make popcorn and enjoy time together in the comforts of your home.

Grab some blankets and wait for dark. Check out the stars and see how many constellations you can name. Check out the App store for some free apps to help identify those that you find.
No Pool? No Problem
Hook up a sprinkler in your front or back yard and have a blast! Or fill some super soaker water guns and have an epic water battle. Water balloons are also a great idea for cooling off!
