The history of Apex can be dated back to the late 1800s. Built around the railroad station, its rich history can be seen in every downtown building and is celebrated and cherished by both residents and visitors. This pride and history is never more evident than during the holiday season. Decorations and lights adorn Salem Street causing passersby to drive just a bit slower this time of year. Storefronts shimmer enticing pedestrians to come in and search for that perfect treasure.
The holiday season brings about feelings of nostalgia and anticipation of traditions that many rely on to make them feel secure in a world of uncertainty. One tradition that has stood the test of time for over 50 years is the Annual Apex Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Apex Rotary Club. Brining in over 10,000 people each year, many of whom stake their claim on a prime viewing locations in the early hours of the morning, or the night before, the parade promises to have something for everyone.
Homemade floats, commercial floats, school bands, dance teams and boy scouts, all coming together for one night to usher in the official start of the Christmas season in Apex. You may think that parades are only for the littlest viewers, but all you have to do is look at the faces of the young at heart as the classic cars of years gone by roll down Salem Street to know this is not only for the little kids, but for the big kids as well. Although the parade is the highlight of the celebration, children of all ages come out to mingle and put in a good word with Mr. & Mrs. Claus and have the opportunity to ride in a horse drawn carriage through Apex. Family and friends come together in the early morning hours to enjoy a pancake breakfast at the Apex Fire Station and sneak a peek at the little red caboose that lives on the tracks.
The celebrations are not only a way to officially start the holiday season, but also serves as a history of our great town. Each year the Firebelles, the Women’s Auxiliary of the Apex Fire Department, ride through downtown Apex on the original 1939 Ford Hunter Firetruck that was used at the original Apex Fire Station. In fact, downtown Apex itself during the holidays is much like taking a step back in time. For over thirty years, the Apex Historical Society has hosted it Historical Homes tours. Visitors are able to experience first-hand that which they have heard so much about.
Historic Apex during the holidays gives its residence and visitors a chance to step away from the fast-paced hectic world around them. Taking everyone back to a slower time. A time when life was simple and friends and families gathered to celebrate together. Sharing stories and making memories to last a lifetime, these are the gifts we are promised year after year.
