The Apex Sunrise Rotary Club may be only seven years old, but you wouldn’t guess that when you look at the impact this young Rotary Club has made on the local community.
Have you been to the Bone Suckin’ Sauce Peak City Pig Fest in Apex? That’s the Apex Sunrise Rotary Club. Have you been to Triangle Oktoberfest? That’s the Apex Sunrise Rotary Club.
The Apex Sunrise Rotary Club is the result of the community recognizing the need for a second Rotary Club in Apex. Chartered in March 2010, the club started out with 26 charter members, and has expanded its membership quickly over the years. The Apex Sunrise Rotary Club meets every Tuesday morning at 7:15am for breakfast, fellowship and a guest speaker. Visitors and visiting Rotarians are always welcome.
The club’s signature event is the Bone Suckin’ Sauce Peak City Pig Fest, held every June in Historic Downtown Apex. This year’s event is scheduled for June 16-17, 2017, where more than 30,000 people will gather to enjoy music, a beer garden, food vendors, pig races and of course, barbecue. Forty-eight cook teams from across the country will be competing for more than $12,000 in prize money and to be crowned Pig Fest Grand Champion. Entering its 6th year, the Bone Suckin’ Sauce Peak City Pig Fest has gained a national reputation among cook teams and the BBQ faithful.
The Apex Sunrise Rotary Foundation has raised more than $100,000 from the proceeds for local charities and causes including Western Wake Crisis Ministry, Operation Coming Home, the Miracle League of the Triangle, and many others.
In the fall, the club’s focus turns to the Triangle Oktoberfest. The Apex Sunrise Rotary Club joins the Cary-MacGregor Rotary Club to present a weekend of music, German food and beer, dancing, wiener dog races and much more. Entering its third year, the Triangle Oktoberfest benefits Alzheimer’s North Carolina.
“The Apex Sunrise Rotary Club takes its responsibility to give back to the community very seriously,” said Tom Haynie, president of the Apex Sunrise Rotary Club. “Our club is vibrant and energetic with a can-do attitude. That is what has helped us have a big impact in such a short time.”
The Apex Sunrise Rotary Club also sponsors the Interact Club at Apex High School. The Interact Club gives students a chance to work with Rotary on leadership and public service projects throughout the year.
